Obituary

Steven Sidney Engelhardt passed away due to natural causes at Peace Hospice in Great Falls on Thursday, June 25, 2026. Cremation has taken place, and arrangements are pending with Holland & Bonine Funeral Home.

Steve was born on December 18, 1948, in Havre, Montana, to Kathrine (Kraft) Engelhardt and L. Martin Engelhardt. He was the youngest of three children. Steve attended St. Jude's Catholic School from kindergarten through twelfth grade, where he excelled in basketball and track and graduated with the Class of 1967.

Following high school, Steve attended Northern Montana College, now Montana State University-Northern, where he earned degrees in Teaching, English, and Construction Drafting. He later completed the Master Gardener Program, combining his love of learning with his passion for gardening.

Steve's strong work ethic began at an early age as a paperboy. He was a jack of all trades and quickly developed a reputation for being able to build, fix, or figure out just about anything. He worked several jobs throughout his early years, including managing Bear's Gas Station, but his true passion was building. A skilled carpenter and hands-on draftsman, Steve designed blueprints by hand and built countless homes and structures throughout the community. There truly wasn't much Steve couldn't do.

In the 1970s, Steve founded Steve's Building Service, a business he proudly operated for more than five decades. Alongside his wife, Mary, he co-owned Annie's Pet Hotel and Saddle Butte Memorial Gardens. His craftsmanship and dedication can still be seen throughout Havre and the surrounding area, where many families continue to live in homes he thoughtfully designed and built.

On January 1, 1977, Steve married his best friend and the love of his life, Mary Engelhardt. Together they built a life centered on family, hard work, and unconditional love. They shared nearly 49 years of marriage and raised four children: Marty (Megan) Engelhardt, Jim (Liz) Engelhardt, Stevie Engelhardt, and Annie O'Day Engelhardt.

Steve lived by the values of honor, respect, and loyalty. He taught his children and grandchildren the importance of hard work, integrity, and treating others with kindness. He was a patient and generous man who was always willing to share his knowledge with anyone willing to learn. To his family, he was a true patriarch whose strength, wisdom, and example shaped generations.

In 1991, Steve founded the Havre Northstar boxing club and dedicated countless hours to coaching youth, including his three sons, whom he was immensely proud of. He traveled throughout the United States and Canada with his family and boxing teams, helping young athletes build confidence, discipline, and character. He also proudly participated in Special Olympics activities with his daughter Annie, who was truly the apple of his eye.

Beyond his work and coaching, Steve found joy in gardening, baking, cooking, skiing and spending time with family. He believed in the goodness of people and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Even in his later years, he continued working, building, and helping others. He outworked many men half his age and never truly slowed down.

Steve was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Engelhardt, and his parents, Kathrine (Kraft) Engelhardt and L. Martin Engelhardt.

He is survived by his children, Marty (Megan) Engelhardt, Jim (Liz) Engelhardt, Stevie Engelhardt, and Annie O'Day Engelhardt; his siblings, Mel (Pat) Engelhardt of Reno, Nevada, and Patty Morgan of Spokane, Washington; his grandchildren, Keanan (Matreca) Engelhardt, Lily Engelhardt, Jayr (Megan) Caplette, Landen Caplette, Angelina Caplette, and Kadence Marie ; and his great-grandchildren, Xander Caplette, Carter Engelhardt, and Cleo Caplette.

More than anything, Steve loved his family. Whether he was coaching boxing, tending a garden, building a home, baking in the kitchen, or cheering on his children and grandchildren, he found his greatest joy in the people he loved. His legacy is not only found in the buildings he constructed, but in the values, memories, and love he leaves behind. While his family mourns this tremendous loss, they find comfort in knowing that Steve and Mary are together once again.

Steve will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
