Ronald
Bastin
June 29, 1936 – February 20, 2025
Ron was born in Clear Lake, MN on June 29th, 1936, during the Depression. His family
relocated to Poplar, MT after WW2 where he attended school until he graduated from Poplar
High School in 1953. He worked for the MT highway dept. for 2 years before volunteering for
the army in 1955 where he attended training at Ft. Carson (CO) before moving to Ft. Lewis
(WA) and later Ladd AF Base (AK). Holland and Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. Please visit Ronald's online memorial page to send a card or leave a message of condolence for his family at www.hollandbonine.com
After leaving the army, Ron attended MSU in Bozeman, where he received his degree in Civil
Engineering. He then went on to earn his Professional Engineering (PE), license, which is the
highest level of competence an engineer can receive. He married Elaine Kuntz in 1961 and
they had a daughter and settled down in Helena until she passed away. In 1974, he married his
high school sweetheart, Beverley Tveten, who had 3 daughters that he raised as his own. In
1975, they had a son together and settled in Havre in their first home with all 5 children.
He dedicated many years of his life working across the globe, including in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait,
the United Arab Emirates, Oregon, New Mexico, New York, Guam, Hawaii, and Alaska. Despite
his extensive travels, his heart always remained in Montana. For many years, he served as the
Director of Public Works for the City of Havre, where he made a lasting impact. A Certified Land Surveyor in five states, he contributed to nearly every highway and bridge in Montana. In
addition to his professional achievements, he was a Master Gardener, finding joy in tending to
his garden and being in the company of the squirrels and birds that frequented his backyard.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude and give special recognition to the
dedicated caregivers from Angel Care and Northern Montana Care Center. Their
compassionate care and support were instrumental in making him comfortable during his final
days, and the family deeply appreciates their kindness and dedication.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Clara, and sister Alice.
He is survived by his wife Beverley, son Jon, three daughters Ronna MacKay (Tim), Teri Bohn (Chuck), and Melanie McCulloch, brothers Wally and Eldon "Butch", sisters Coralee Orton and Charlene Dumais as well as 7 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
