Obituary

Robert Stump, Sr., Thunderbird Man, 82, passed away due to natural causes at Benefis Health Care on Sunday, April 23, 2023. Wake services will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 24, 2023, and will continue until his funeral service, which will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, all at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church with Douglas Standing Rock officiating. Holland & Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

Robert was born on September 13, 1940, at home in Rocky Boy to Pete and Mamie Ann (Denny) Stump. He was raised in Rocky Boy, attending Parker School and Box Elder School. Robert went on to attend Northern Montana College, where he received his electrician certificate. He married Louise Windy Boy in June of 1959, and the couple had eight children whom they raised in Rocky Boy. Robert worked for the mines in Butte for a time and then the family moved home. He worked as a ranch hand for various ranches, for the Rocky Boy Police Department, as a wildland firefighter for the forestry department, heavy equipment operator for the roads department, as an electrician, for tribal housing as a maintenance supervisor and then executive director, and his final job was working as a transportation driver and security guard for the Rocky Boy Health Center.

Robert enjoyed shooting pool and playing horseshoes, hunting, his horses, and fly fishing. He adored his "monkeys", grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Stump; son, Darren Stump; grandchildren, Donovan Taylor and Yancy Charette, Robert H. Stump III, and Kristi Dawn St. Pierre; parents, Pete and Mamie Stump; siblings, Pete Stump, Jr., Harold Stump, Darlene Red Door, Keno Stump, and Edwina Stump; and several niece, nephews, and cousins.

Robert is survived by his children, Robert (Ruth) Stump, Jr. of Missoula, Denise (Allen Nault) Stump of Havre, Ramona (Steve Morsette, Sr.) Stump, Mamie (Ted) Montes, Shannon (Byron Swan) Stump, and Sam (Starr St. Marks) Stump, all of Rocky Boy, and Toni (David Cochran) Stump of Box Elder; and numerous grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brothers, Gordon (Bobbi) Stump of Salt Lake City, UT, and Ronnie Stump, Sr. of Rocky Boy; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family and friends.
