Obituary

Richard Glen "Dick" Monteau, 77, passed away on Monday, January 6, 2014, at Benefis Medical Center in Great Falls of natural causes. Wake services will begin Monday evening, January 6, 2014, and will continue until his funeral service, which shall be at 10:00 a.m., all at Rocky Boy Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the Rocky Boy Veterans' Cemetery. Holland & Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements, and you can leave your memories/condolences at www.hollandbonine.com. Dick was born on April 8, 1936, in a log cabin in Rocky Boy to Joe and Florence (Collins) Monteaux. He was raised on Rocky Boy until the family moved to Portland, OR, when he was around 8 years old. Dick graduated as Valedictorian from Flandreau High School in 1954, having lettered in football there. He attended Haskell Indian College, winning the Golden Trowel award for bricklaying in 1955. Dick served in the US Army, 101st Airborne, as a paratrooper with 36 jumps. In December of 1957, he married Dolores "Dee" McLaughlin, and their union was blessed with three children. Following his military service, he continued his education at the University of Kansas, graduating in 1966 with a Bachelor's degree in English. In 1968, Dick was chosen as 1 of 10 to intern with the Office of the Commissioner, Bureau of Indian Affairs in Washington, DC. Dick & Dee divorced, and in 1976, he married Joann Wolf Black, and their union was blessed with a son. In the late 1970's he began raising Red Angus cattle, which he sold and purchased his first racehorse. This was the start of his lifetime love of raising and training racehorses. In 1995, he retired from Indian Health Services after 30 years of service in various capacities. Dick and Joann divorced, and in 2004, he married Linda Yardley in Chouteau. Following his retirement, Dick was able to devote more time to breeding, training, and racing his AQHA quarter horses. He liked to give his horses unique names such as Dirty-Faced White Man, Wicked Falula, Dirty-Faced White Girl, and Draft Dodging John Wayne, but also to honor those he admired, such as Billy Runs Above. Dick was a history buff, but it was his personal family history that interested him the most. He also loved writing, cooking, traveling, and taking his sailboat out on the Potomac. He was preceded in death by his parents Joe and Florence Monteau; his grandparents Ed and Anna Collins, who raised him; his sisters Verna and Sandra; his brother Joe; and his many aunts, uncles, & cousins. Dick is survived by his wife Linda Yardley-Monteau of Taos Pueblo, NM; his children Maria (Mitch) Billis of Bozeman, Cynthia (Ray) Moore of Helena, Lance (Karna) Monteau of Bismark, ND, and Larry (Dana) Monteau of Busby; his stepdaughter Sage Yardley of Taos, NM; his stepson Greg Wolf Black of Billings; his grandchildren Brennan, Ahlea, Laryn, Ray Jr., Maria, Cyera, Reyne, Samantha, Kenna, Mia, Macey, Keia, Isiah, Mireja, and Elias; his brothers Jon (Mary) Monteaux of Rocky Boy, Curtis (Terry) Monteau of Tuscon, AZ, Harold (Lisa) of Rio Rancho, NM; and sisters Donna DeVinney of Missoula, Judy Monteau of Kalipsell, Tracy of Seattle, WA, and Carole (Jim) Henderson and Jill (Vincent) Monteau, all of Rocky Boy; together with numerous nieces, nephews and grandchildren throughout the United States, as well as special friends Rudy Buckman, Dale Pepion and Jose Canalos.
