Obituary

Richard James McLain "Get the chain McLain", 81, died Sunday morning May 1, 2011 at his daughter and son in law's home in Havre, Montana. Cremation has taken place his graveside service will be held at the Highland Cemetery later in the fall. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Richard's honor may be made to the St. Jude Catholic Church or to the Hayford Scholarship 330 3rd Street NE Mayville, ND 58257. Services have been entrusted to Holland & Bonine Funeral Home. Richard was born September 7, 1929 in Havre, Montana to Eugene Loren and Ethel (Sticka) McLain. He attended St. Jude School. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1950 and was honorably discharged in 1954 as an Airman First Class. He married Gay Hayford on June 29, 1952 in Mayville, North Dakota. Richard was in the military the couple moved many places, when they were first married the couple lived in Finley, ND; Rapid City, SD; and Great Fall, Mt. After his honorable discharge they made their home in Havre, Montana. The couple had three children: two sons and a daughter. Richard went to work for the Great Northern Railroad in 1937 in Havre and retired in 1992 as an engineer. The "McLains" were known to always have their coffee pot on and many people would stop by for a hot cup of coffee and conversation. After Richard retired he and Gay traveled the United States in their motorhome eventually settling in Enumclaw, Washington. Richard was a friendly soul who made friends everywhere they went. He was a Mr. Fix it and helped many people with projects that they didn't even know they had. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He had a knack for helping others and could build anything. He and Gay enjoyed their time traveling the United States and making new friends along the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 58 years Gay McLain who passed on September 7, 2010; one brother Pat McLain and two sisters: Rita Odle and Donna Davies. Richard is survived by his children: Butch (Joni) McLain of Lakewood, WA; Jim (Jessica) McLain of Maple Valley, WA; and Monica (Travis) Abdallah of Havre, Montana. Grandchildren: Shawn and Brianna McLain; Tony (Trista) Omlie; Tyler and Tanner Abdallah; and Brandon McLain. Great Grandchildren: Nathan, Madisyn, and Drew Oswald; Spencer Thompson; Taylor and Devlin Guse; and Lucas and Brooke Omlie. One sister Shirley Padilla and several nieces and nephews.
