Raymond L. Chandler, Sr., 59, of Fort Belknap, moved to the other camp October 31, 2011, due to complications from cancer at the Fort Belknap IHS facility. He was surrounded by family and friends. Raymond's Gros Ventre "proper name" is Wah Not Sa (Hail Man). There will be a wake at 5:00 pm Wednesday, November 2, 2011 followed by the Rosary at 7:00 pm at the Mission Rec Center in Hays, Montana. Funeral services will be at 1:00 pm Thursday, November 3, 2011 with Fathers Retzel and Erickson officiating along with traditional Native American services. Services and arrangements have been entrusted to Holland and Bonine Funeral Home. Raymond was born August 2, 1952 at the old Fort Belknap Agency Hospital to George J. Chandler, Sr., and Marjorie (Keiser) Chandler. His life began in Hays, Montana. He moved with his family on the Relocation Program to Oakland, CA and spent seven years there before returning with his family to the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation. Raymond loved hunting and fishing, teasing visiting, pow wows, local native basketball games, being around people, and making hand crafted traditional items. He received great strength from his traditional spiritual beliefs. He attended Flandreau Indian School where he graduated high school in 1971. His working career included jobs in Rapid City and Sisseton, South Dakota, Sundance, Wyoming in the Forest Service and Fort Belknap Housing Department Maintenance Program. His true love and calling was as a Council member on the Fort Belknap Community Council, where both Gros Ventre and Assiniboine Tribes elected him as their at-large representative and Vice Chairman. He was very proud and honored to serve the people of Fort Belknap. His life career ended doing what he loved best: helping people in the Fort Belknap Court System. Raymond is survived by his wife Ina, of the family home, his sons; Raymond L. Chandler, Jr. of Hays, MT, Benjamin V. Chandler of Pocatello, ID, John R. Chandler of Sisseton, SD, James L. Chandler of the family home, and his daughter Susan P. V. Chandler of Minneapolis, MN; step daughter Sheri L. Windy Boy of Hays, MT; and grandchildren he raised as his own, Anthony S. Cliff and Ticia L. Cliff of the family home. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren; Raymond III, Alta, Vincent, Donovan, Julian, Vanessa, Kingston, Wakiayan, Yamni, Kimimilo, Robert, Ray Ray, and Raelle; brothers George J. Chandler, Jr. (Berva) of Hays, MT, Craig L Chandler, Sr. (Lila) of Hays, MT; sisters, Peggy (Penny) Chandler of Eaglechild, MT, Linda (Susie) Chandler of Hays, MT and Carol Chandler of Fort Belknap Agency, MT; god-children Trevor Chandler, Charlene Chandler, and Ross Dale; and numerous nieces and nephews. Raymond was preceded in death by his father George J. Chandler, Sr., a still born son on November 11, 1996, nephew Johnny D. Kindness, grandparents Al and Cora Chandler, and Alta and Wilber Keiser. Raymond is also survived by his traditional adopted parents Joeand Alpha Dean Ironman, Sr. traditional adopted mother Joyce Gone, and traditional adopted brothers Harold (Jiggs) Main, George Horse Capture, Jr., Wayne Azure, Reese Gray, Howard Gone, John Allen, Jr., and Vincent (Poncho) Hawley. Extended families include Hawley, Walker and Pohrt.
