Obituary

Peter J. Demontiney, Sr., 80, passed away due to natural causes at Benefis Healthcare on Thursday, April 28, 2022.  Wake services will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, 2022, and will continue until his funeral service, which will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 2, 2022, all at the Arnold Four Souls residence.  Burial will follow in the Four Souls Family Cemetery.  Holland & Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

Peter was born in Fort Belknap, Montana, the oldest child of Joseph Demontiney Sr., and Delia Four Souls.  He spent the majority of his early life in the foothills of Centennial Mountain on the Rocky Boys Indian Reservation where he lived his entire life.  He attended schools in Rocky Boy, later earning his GED.  He worked numerous jobs including the Saw Mill and Dry Fork Farms, farming with his dad in Laredo, and 30 years with the Indian Health Service Sanitation Department, Ambulance Service, and CHR transport driver.

Peter was an expert trapper, processing hides that he sold to support his family.

Peter married Victoria LaMere and to this union were born seven children, Audrey, Laverne, Arnold, Floyvin, Estelle, Darwin, and Peter Jr.  Besides their own children, Peter and Victoria's home was always filled with their beloved grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and other relatives, many of whom they helped raise.

He was very proud of his ancestry as a direct descendant of the Cree chiefs Black Powder, Big Bear, and Little Bear, through his grandfather Four Souls and his mother Delia.  A fluent Cree speaker, he was a well-respected member of the Chippewa and Cree tribes.  A humble man of few words, he was known for his quiet and gentle spirit, always putting the welfare of others before his own.

Listening to music and reading were two of Peter's favorite activities.  Louis L'amour books filled his house along with the music of Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, Elvis, and other oldies.

Peter was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Audrey; son, Darwin; grandson, Kyle; and sisters, Laverne, Linda, Dola Belcourt, and Fern Doney.

Survivors include Victoria and their children; 48 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; sisters, Jeannette Demontiney, Yvonne Denny, Donita Sue Demontiney, Natalie Demontiney, Mary Demontiney, and Hayley Demontiney; brothers James Demontiney and Joseph Demontiney Jr.; and many nieces and nephews too numerous to mention.

Peter's family expresses their gratitude to his many relatives and friends that were dear to him.
