Patsy Jean
Gopher
May 1, 1939 – February 3, 2024
Surrounded by loved ones, our beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend left this earthly world in the early morning hours on Saturday, February 3, 2024.
Patsy Jean Stump Gopher, Miko Peyesiw Iskwew, was born to the late John Stump, Sr., and Blanket Mighty Voice Stump on May 1, 1939, in Rocky Boy, Montana. She was 84 years of age.
She was born and raised in the traditional Chippewa Cree way of life; she had strong beliefs and practiced this way which was instilled in her from birth to her leaving of this world. Continuously, she shared her knowledge of the history, language, tradition, and culture of her people. She exemplified what would be considered a true Chippewa Cree woman.
She was a homemaker for the duration of her life and took pride in being there for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and family members, along with those who came to her home for visits. She was most happy when her home was filled with loved ones who shared laughter and love along with the life lessons she passed on. While she made her life's work as a homemaker, she was often called upon by various tribal departments to share her knowledge and advice, more specifically for children and families. She enjoyed the camaraderie of the other elders whom she worked with and for … they all held a special place in her heart.
In her younger days, she enjoyed traditional dancing at Pow Wows. She traveled to many places in Indian Country, following her sons. It was through her travels that she met and made lifelong friends who became family … then and now.
Her favorite pastime was cruising down the road to the Northern Winz to 'relax' while she partook in cigarettes, pop, and playing machines. It was also here that she would enjoy visits with all who sat to share stories and enjoyed their company. Her best friends were her daughters and granddaughters, and she also enjoyed her "Ole Girls Club" which included her gambling friends and those she had daily phone conversations with.
She is survived by her children; Evelyn Baker, Clement Baker Jr (Oriann), Colleen Baker, Harlan Gopher Baker, Keith Gopher, Pam Corcoran (Steve), and Tia Mandan (Dayton); Twenty-five grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, along with numerous adopted siblings, nieces, nephews, and children.
She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Gopher, Sr, parents; children Natessa 'DeeDee' Gopher and Phyllis Baker, and one infant daughter; brothers Donald, Pat, Pete, Jim, Fred, Clifford, Rocky, John, and Douglas Stump; sisters Flora Stump Big Knife and Florence Stump Sunchild.
Wake services will begin on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at 4:00 pm at the Lutheran Church. A traditional funeral will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, February 5, 2024. With her burial at the Rocky Boy Cemetery.
