Morton Benjamin
Goldstein
April 13, 1942 – December 5, 2020
Morton Benjamin Goldstein, 78, passed away on December 5th, 2020 after a sudden onset and intense battle with ischemic colitis. Mort was born April 13th, 1942, to Morris and Sara Goldstein in Brooklyn, New York. Seeking an engineering school and a reprieve from crowded cities, Mort chose Montana State University where he earned his Bachelors Degree in Engineering, met the future mother of his children and his friend for life Doug Ferkin. He began his first career as an engineer at Mare Island Shipyard in Vallejo, CA. While working there he was recognized for his work on the development of the USS Kamehameha Ballistic Missile Submarine. He married Ina Mae Jones (later divorced) and had four children, Brian, Scott, Janice & Annette. Later Mort attended the University of Montana where he received a Law Degree. Mort first practiced law in Oakland, California where a successful case he tried was later cited in support of the Supreme Court Case Roe V. Wade. Mort and his family moved to Havre, MT, in 1975 where he went on to practice private law for many years.
Starting from his early days playing stick ball in Brooklyn, Mort was skilled at playing all sports involved with hitting anything: golf, tennis, racquet-ball, ping-pong, and finally his favorite, pool. He also enjoyed sailing and fishing. Later in life Mort found great joy in playing pool with his friends at the Eagles Club and in tournaments around the state. He also enjoyed serving meals at the Havre Senior Center and was a member of The Ark Church. Mort was blessed with many dear friends and a loving extended family. He is survived by: his sister Zena & brother-in-law Joe Moskowitz of Long Island, New York, his brother Stuart and sister-in-law Marilyn Goldstein of Staten Island, New York; his children and grand-children, Scott (Stephanie Hand), Zachary & Riley Goldstein of Eugene, Oregon, Janice & Audrey Goldstein of Everett, WA, and Annette (Mike), Mackenzie, Evan and Kai Mueller of Wenatchee, WA. Mort was preceded in death by his parents, Morris & Sara Goldstein and his oldest son, Brian.
Mort was passionate about living a healthy life, helping others, playing pool, and could be counted on for a good story. He was a loyal friend and was always willing to help those in need. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family who are saddened they could not have had more time with him.
A memorial service will be planned to honor Mort's life at a later date. The family would like to thank Mort's dear friends the Moore family, and the medical staff who showed such care for him at Benefis Hospital and Peace Hospice House in Great Falls, MT, in his final days. Arrangements are in the care of Holland & Bonine Funeral Home in Havre, MT. Memorials can be made to The Ark Church at 325 2nd St, Havre, MT 59501.
