Monte was born on July 27, 1957, in Fort Belknap, to William and Theresa (Chapkin) Stump.  He was raised in Rocky Boy, attending Parker School, and then moving on to Box Elder High School.  Following his school years, Monte worked several years at the old post plant.  In 1976, he met and married Lucy Francis at the Rocky Boy Lutheran Church.  The couple had five children, whom they raised in Rocky Boy.  Soon after their marriage, Monte began working for the Rocky Boy Police Department, working his way up to Sergeant in just over 10 years.  He retired from law enforcement, and went to work for the Rocky Boy schools, working as a bus driver and custodian for many years.  Monte retired in 2013 due to his health.

Monte was known throughout Native country for the songs he composed for NAC.  Thru song & prayer, Monte gained valuable and life-lasting bonds with many people across the country.  He always enjoyed it when people stopped by to visit and share stories.  Monte opened his house to any and all that needed help; he truly had a heart of gold.  He enjoyed woodworking, composing peyote songs, singing, attending traditional ceremonies, watching the Rocky Boy Stars basketball games, and traveling.  Once the grandchildren started coming, he spent every minute possible with his beloved grandchildren.

Monte was preceded in death by his parents William and Theresa Stump; his brother William Denny; and his sister Deborah Stump Arkinson.

He is survived by his wife Lucy Stump of Rocky Boy; his five children, Victoria Stump, Antonio (Lisa) Stump, Natasha Stump, Rainbow (Christian Pease) Stump, and Nacona (Julie Werk) Stump, all of Rocky Boy; his seven grandchildren; his brothers Ervinal Denny, Sr., and Willie (Ruby) Stump, all of Rocky Boy, and Harley Good Bear of Canada; his sister Theresa Burgess of Minnesota; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.
