Mildred Doney, 91, a long time primary school educator, passed to her Creator on July 29, 2012 at the Northern Montana Care Center. Mildred was born March 20, 1921. Her parents were Fred and Barbara "Kaercher" Farrow of Cavalier, North Dakota. Mildred spent her childhood in Cavalier, North Dakota with brothers Ray and Jack. Mildred attended Valley City, North Dakota Teachers College and later graduated with a Bachelor of Science in education from Northern Montana College in Havre, Montana in 1957. Later she would return to Northern for her fifth year. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and also served as President. Mildred's first marriage was to Tollef Evenson of North Dakota. She lost Tollef to a grain elevator accident. Their daughter Judith was born two weeks after the funeral of her father and lived a month before dying from a birth defect. Those of us who knew Mildred, know she trusted God in the face of such life tests. In 1948, Mildred married David C. Doney of Chinook, Montana. They spent a full 50 years together living, working, and serving the Chinook community before Dave passed away in 1998. Mildred and Dave are survived by two daughters, Debby Gilmore of Fargo, North Dakota, and Jennifer Doney (Jack Finley) of Ennis, Montana; six grandchildren, Beau (Adrianne) Flom, Nova (Randy) Daniels, Tara (Jon) Paisano, Rhonda (Dan) Aitchison, Kenny (Nora) Gilmore, and Carrie (Chris) Mundlin; 12 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-granddaughter. Mildred served her life as a school teacher for over 38 years, first in North Dakota and then in Montana. She taught in Chinook for 30 years, retiring from there in 1979. Mildred continued her devotion to education by driving the Book Mobile around the county for the next 3 years. After that, still being interested in teaching, she went on to teach at the Hilldale Hutterite Colony for 4 years. Even after moving into the Havre Care Center she had the opportunity to serve as a tutor for a staff member's son. Mildred was a member of the Chinook United Methodist Church and found service there in many capacities; as the church treasurer, as an officer in both the district UMW and Yellowstone UMW, and a delegate to the Yellowstone Conference for 8 years. Mildred was never one to sit still and worked as a columnist for 10 years to the Blaine County Journal-News-Opinion during her later years living in Chinook. In 2003, Mildred moved to Havre and into the Northern Montana Care Center due to medical issues. Mildred continued to educate the community by writing three articles for the Blaine County Journal on her first hand experience with dialysis. During her 9 years living at the Care Center, Mildred continued to be active, serving as President of the Resident Council for 7 years and was instrumental as an advocate for the new chapel built on the care center grounds. Funeral services will be held at the Chinook United Methodist Church 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 2, 2012 with Pastor Jack Mattingly officiating. Burial will follow at the Kuper Memorial Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to The United Methodist Church of Chinook 339 Ohio Street Chinook, Montana 59523. Holland and Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. Now, Dear Lord, robe her in the mantle of Thy grace, and illumine her face with the lights of Thy mercy and compassion.
