Maxine Fay Denny, 80, a retired nurse, longtime resident and enrolled member of Rocky Boy's Reservation, passed away at her home on March 23, 2015, surrounded by family and friends. Wake services will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25, 2015, and will continue until their funeral service, which will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 26, 2015, all at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rocky Boy. Maxine was born in 1934 in Chinook, MT and moved to WA with her parents, while in her teens, to find work. In 1961 she married Orval Phillips and (divorced in 1965). In 1966 she moved back to Havre and married the love of her life Walter "Moose" Denny in 1967. She worked as a nurse in Havre for approximately one year until she moved to Rocky Boy and started the first day care for the children and named it "Ah-Wah-Si-Sah-K". Her next job was as an LPN for the IHS at Rocky Boy's Health Clinic and it was there where she discovered her passion for serving and caring for the people of Rocky Boy; she continued this for approximately 25 years until she retired. After retirement she enrolled in school at Stone Child College and graduated with her AA degree and then proceeded to work in various offices throughout the Tribe. She was a proud member of the Chippewa-Cree Tribe and loved the people of Rocky Boy. She was a devout member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rocky Boy and had a special "neighborly" relationship with Father Pete and spoke with him almost on a daily basis. Sister Margaret was also a very important part of Maxine's life and would visit on a weekly basis. In her younger days Maxine's favorite activities included hitting the "pow-wow" highway with the kids and friends to play cards and hand-game, or to travel out of state just to play bingo. She loved to dance, listen to music and most of all she loved cooking for her family and friends. One of the biggest highlights of her life was in 1967; she was the first woman to start a concession stand at the Rocky Boy's Pow-wow. She continued this until the early 90's at which time her son Pete took over the tradition. Then in 2008 her daughter and son-in- law Tina and Michael King continued with the tradition of Poozy's Mexi-Shack. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend and will be remembered by her beautiful smile, joyous laugh and her entertaining stories. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends near and far. She was preceded in death by Chris & Alvina Torres, brothers Albert AKA "Sonny" and Floyd AKA "Badman", her loving husband Walter R. Denny Sr. AKA "Moose" and her special granddaughter Sydalia Demontiney and her longtime friend Joyce Four Souls. Maxine is survived by by her children Pete and & (Gaile) Torres, Matthew & (Joyce) Denny, Curtis Denny, Bruce Denny, Walter R. Jr. & (Trina) Denny, Tina & (Michael) King, Roxanne & (Ted) Demontiney, Greg Denny and Joscayne Denny, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
