Obituary

Mary L. Wolfchild, 74, Kihew Pipikwan Notikwew (Eagle Whistle Old Lady), passed away due to natural causes at her Rocky Boy residence on Thursday, February 19, 2026.  Wake services will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 19, 2026, and will continue until her funeral service, which will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 20, 2026, all at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Kelly Eagleman officiating.  Burial will follow in the New Rocky Boy Cemetery.  Holland & Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

Mary was born on June 25, 1951, in Wolf Point, Montana, to Otto and Nida (Kennedy) Cantrell.  She was raised in Wolf Point, Poplar, and Great Falls, attending high school in Wolf Point.  Following her high school years, she attended nursing school in Great Falls, and in 1969, Mary married Henry Wolfchild, with whom she had 5 children, adopted a grandson, and gained three bonus children with the marriage.  She stayed home and cared for her family until the children were older, and then Mary continued her education at Stone Child College, where she majored in early childhood education and human services.  After college, she worked at headstart as a teacher, tribal daycare as a care provided, the ICU in Helena as a CNA, and then home health in Rocky Boy.  Mary retired to care for her husband and grandchildren.

Mary was a loving, spunky lady who enjoyed sewing, beading, reading, playing cards and the machines, her Solitaire game, watching movies, game shows, and Dr. Phil, and listening to country music.  Her favorite pastime was spending time with and teasing her family, especially her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Wolfchild, Sr.; children, Vivian Vazquez and Benny Wolfchild; granddaughters, Michelle Wolfchild-Parker and Zenjo Wolfchild; parents, Otto and Nida Cantrell; brothers, David, Richard, Courtney, Jiggs, Rusty, Melty, Virgil, and Newton Cantrell, and Stevie Greyhawk; sisters, Emma Groat, Vivian Martin, and Hazel, Roseanne, Emily, and Annie Cantrell; adopted parents, John and Gladys Cantrell; and numerous other relatives.

Mary is survived by her children, Relda Wolfchild of Blackfoot, ID, and Nida Wolfchild, Bernadine (Louis Weaselboy) Wolfchild, and Mary Small, all of Rocky Boy; sons, Henry Wolfchild, Jr., Thomas Wolfchild, and Timothy Wolfchild, all of Rocky Boy; 27 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter; adopted sisters, Jonnie Sangret, Cathy McLaughlin, and Karen and Vickie Cantrell, all of Great Falls; sisters, Idarae Youngman of Poplar, Kay Cantrell, and Yvonne Cantrell; brothers, Leonard (Sharon) Cantrell, Sr. of Rocky Boy, Otto Cantrell, Jr. of Wolf Point, and Arthur Cantrell of Poplar; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family and friends.
