Mark Joseph
Mayer Jr.
January 30, 1939 – March 31, 2025
Mark Joseph Mayer, Jr., 86, passed away at home on March 31, 2025. Cremation has taken place, and according to his wishes, there will be no services. Holland & Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. Please visit Mark's online memorial page to send a card or leave a message of condolence for his family at www.hollandbonine.com.
Mark was born on January 30, 1939, in Havre, along with twin brother Frank Delano, to Mark Jacob Mayer, Sr., and Josephine Katherine (Emily) Mayer. It was also the birthday of their older sister, Ramona Katherine. He was a proud member of the Little Shell Band of Chippewa Indians and Metis Tribe on the Emily side of the family, and of German/Prussion/Polish descent on the Mayer side.
Mark attended St. Jude Thaddeus and Havre Public schools and started working as a teenager. He worked many jobs, including wrangling antelope for a Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks project. He mostly worked in grocery stores in various positions. Mark later worked for Havre Public Schools before retiring.
He met Darleen O'Donnell while working for Northern Transfer and Storage, and they married September 21, 1968, at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church in Havre. Together, they had four children: Emily Ann, Donald Patrick, Roy Joseph and Sampson Frank David.
Mark was an avid hunter and fisherman and played men's baseball for many years. He knew a lot about Havre and Hill County's history, especially the Bear Paw Mountains, which he loved. He enjoyed sharing many hunting and fishing stories with his family and friends.
Mark thought the world of Elvis Presley and looked forward to meeting his idol when Elvis was to arrive on the Empire Builder on August 29, 1957. Mark worked a short stint for the Great Northern Railway at the time, and part of his job was to wash the windows of the Empire Builder cars. As he was washing the windows of one of those cars, Elvis saw Mark doing his job and waved to him. While Elvis didn't leave the railcar on his stop in Havre, Mark got to "meet" Elvis, and he loved to tell the story.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Mark and Josephine Mayer; twin brother Frank; brother Patrick; and sisters Ellen "DD" Stubban, Elizabeth "Betty Jo" Strissel, Ramona "Mona K" Irvin and Patricia Smith, sister-in-law Benita (Thompson) Mayer, and daughter-in-law Sylvia McQuade.
He is survived by Darleen, his wife of 56 years and their children; only daughter Emily Ann Mayer; sons Donald Patrick Mayer and Roy Joseph "Pudge" Mayer all of Havre; Sampson "Sam" Frank David Mayer of Great Falls, Montana; twin sons Robert (Erin) McQuade and James (Claudia) McQuade of California; six grandchildren, Mason Mayer, Lilian Mayer, Colin McQuade, Kate McQuade, Joshua McQuade and Faith McQuade; brother David (Kay) Mayer of Havre; sister-in-law Jackie Mayer of Havre; and brother-in-law Dwayne Irvin of Shelby, Montana; and several nieces and nephews.
