Mari Beth Talks Different (Abetu Waste Wiya), 48, passed away on December 12, 2014 in Fort Belknap. Wake services will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at the Sacred Heart Church in Fort Belknap followed by the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Her funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 17, 2014 with Father Joseph Retzel officiating. She is an enrolled member of the Fort Peck Sioux Tribe. She lived in Dagmar, a small town near Plentywood until 1968. She moved to Missoula with her family until 1970 and moved again to Great Falls until 1973. From there she moved to Deer Park, a suburb of Houston Texas where she remained until 1983 at which time she returned to Montana and made her home in Wolf Point. Mari met her soul mate Mike Talks Different and adopted her oldest child Valerie. They moved to Fort Belknap and had Kelly and were married November 7, 1986. The family moved to Wolf Point where she had Mariel in 1992. The family returned to Fort Belknap where Mari continued her education receiving her Associates degree in Social Services and that fall she went to MSU-Northern where she earned her Bachelor's degree in Human Services. She held other jobs but her favorite was being the manager of the Sacred Heart Church which she held upon her death. Mari's hobbies included drum making, beading, and painting. She made drums for all her grandkids and also 14 drums with the Stations of the Cross painted on them that hang in the Sacred Heart Church. Some of her drums are in Germany and several other states. She also beaded several different items that are used at the Sacred Heart Church and as gifts for people that she cared about. Mari loved her traditional culture such as handgames and sundances, but her favorite love was the music. She enjoyed listening to music and singing along with her husband. Mari's favorite pastime would be spending time with her husband, kids, and grandkids. She participated in their lives and their extra-curricular activities such as being the coach of the Harlem swim team for her grandkids, attending their concerts, plays, and games. Mari was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother, her joy was her family and making sure everyone was taken care of and nobody was left out. Mari is survived by her husband Michael Talks Different of Harlem; son Willie Gray of Harlem; daughters Elisha Talks Different (Royce Follet) of Wolf Point, Valerie (William) Blackcrow of Harlem, Kelly (Andrew) Messerly of Havre, and Mariel Talks Different (Casey Standing Rock) of Harlem; grandsons Lance & Lucas Blackcrow, and Marty Snow; great-grandson Peyton Talks Different; granddaughters Drew Messerly & Aizha Talks Different, along with numerous other grandchildren; siblings Joanne Steele of Poplar, Richard Steele of Seattle Wa, and Jeff, Rodney, Dwight, and Danny Nielsen; and her mother Ella Phelps of Bismarck, ND. Mari was preceded in death by daughters Peta'ga (Ember), Gerarda Talks Different, Anna Talks Different, parents Everett Neilsen and Marlene Steele.
