October 20, 1950 – February 28, 2025
Luanne Belcourt "Eagle Woman", 74, of Rocky Boy's Indian reservation, passed away February 28, 2025, at noon of renal failure due to complications from diabetes. She was born October 20, 1950, in Havre, Montana, to Cecilia Parker and Levi Belcourt.
Luanne was known for her intellect, generosity and classy fashion of hats and scarves. She was a well-known educator throughout Indian Country and advocated for her local Chippewa Cree tribal members. Luanne will be dearly missed by all who knew her, especially her three grandchildren, Dezmond Hare, Parker Booth and Madzi Booth.
Out west, Luanne started her educational journey in Denver, Colorado, where she received a bachelor's degree in social work, then a Masters of Higher Education from Montana State University as well as an ABD doctoral program in Leadership & Policy from the University of Washington. As the co-founder of Stone Child College in Rocky Boy, Luanne fully utilized her education and talent to leave a legacy that impacts the lives of current and future generations. The community that she dedicated her life to benefitted from her many talents, from economic development, community planning, grant writing, education, and headstart. Luanne was an active member of her Chippewa Cree culture. She loved traveling, attending pow-wows, collecting blue enamelware with a keen fondness for collecting elephant figurines, and she was an avid reader. With ever the entrepreneurial spirit at heart, Luanne started many businesses; always working towards inspiring Native pride through traditional arts and native fashion.
Luanne was a dedicated foster parent who selflessly opened her home to countless children, providing love, stability and a safe haven throughout their lives.
She is survived by her daughters Dawn Houle (Milo Booth) of Maryland, Florence Hare (Gerald Brittan) of Oklahoma, and Sable Little Sun of Montana, and her siblings Merle Belcourt, Robert Belcourt, Raymond "Jake" Parker Jr., and Martin Parker. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and friends.
Luanne was preceded in death by her parents; siblings Gerald "Chief" Belcourt Sr., Myrtle Belcourt, Levi Belcourt, Elsie Geboe, Linda Belcourt, Duane Belcourt, Margaret "Peggy" Nagel, Leota Standing Bear, Connie Jo Belcourt, Tami Corcoran, Kermit Corcoran, and Mike Ley; and companion, Erwin Little Sun.
Wake services will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rocky Boy's, MT on Monday, March 3, 2025, at 3:00 pm with a traditional funeral at the family burial plot on Tuesday morning. Luanne's family has suggested memorial donations be sent to the American Indian College Fund. Holland & Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
