Obituary

Long time farmer and rancher, Kermit Noren Boyum, 77, surrounded by his family went home to be with his Lord and Savior on May 3, 2012 after a brave 10 month battle with AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia). His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 7, 2012 at the Fifth Avenue Church with Chad Leathermon officiating. Burial will be at the Highland Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the church. Holland and Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements and services. Kermit was born the oldest of four children on the family farm near Hayfield, MN, on March 9, 1935 to Bennie and Sylvia Boyum. While growing up, Kermit attended 10 different schools around the country, graduating from Dakota Lutheran Academy in Minot, ND in 1953. As a teenager, Kermit understood his need for salvation and received Christ as his personal Savior. After graduation, he worked construction helping build Garrison Dam and Montana highways; he rough-necked in the oil patch; and he farmed at Ledger and Ethridge, MT with his father. Kermit married Norma Knutson on June 6, 1954, in the Prosperity Lutheran Church in Sherwood, ND. In 1959 the family moved to the farm and ranch in the Cottonwood community north of Havre, MT In addition to farming, Kermit worked winters at the smelter in Great Falls, and as a boiler operator at the 778th Radar Base for 13 years until it closed in 1981. Kermit retired from farming in 1998 but still enjoyed helping Bruce and Matthew with various projects. He was a huge help and great resource. Kermit enjoyed his retirement years in Havre by doing handyman chores for family and friends. He also enjoyed traveling around the country visiting family in Montana, Alaska, Colorado, Iowa, North Dakota, Minnesota, New Mexico, and South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bennie and Sylvia Boyum; his brothers-in-law, Ronald McPhillips of Shelby and Alan Ryan of Sunburst. Kermit is survived by his wife , Norma; his children, Bruce (Brenda) Boyum, of Havre, MT, Kerma Boyum (Joe Sarmiento) of Havre, MT, Michael (Kimberly) Boyum of Ossian, Iowa, and Kristal Boyum of Havre, MT; 12 grandchildren, Heidi (Dwayn) Cooper, Bethany Boyum, Matthew Boyum, Kjerstin (Sean McCune, Micah Boyum, Ashley Boyum, Annalise Boyum, Malachi Boyum, Alisabeth Boyum, Troy Schafer, Cheyenne Schafer, Kaleb Schafer, and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Bernice (Ronald) McPhillips and Joyce (Alan) Ryan; his brother Dan (Kellie) Boyum all of Whitefish, MT; sister-in -law Lolly Knutson of Havre, MT; close friend Ken (Hilda) Matheson of Conrad, MT and 57 nieces and nephews.
