Kenneth Arthur 'Ken' Campbell, 87, of Havre, MT, a retired railroad locomotive engineer, died at Northern Montana Hospital, as the result of a fall. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are being handled by Holland & Bonine Funeral Home of Havre. Ken is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty Darlene (Klungland) Campbell; his son, Duane (Vicky) Campbell; and daughter, Terri (Alan) Peterson, all of Havre; and grandchildren, Traci (Jeremy) Sorensen, of Havre; Kevin (Cara) Campbell, of Santa Cruz, CA; and Matthew Campbell, of Nogales, AZ; as well as three great-grandchildren, Aiden Sorensen, Brynn and Charles Campbell. Other survivors include his nephew, Richard (Ruth) Ervin, and their extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cora Amelia and Roy Miles Campbell, a daughter, Debra Campbell, and all his siblings, Cora, Geraldine, Glen, Janet, June, and Stanley Campbell.
Ken was born January 15, 1930, in Mesa, AZ to Cora Amelia (Nehring) and Roy Miles Campbell. After his mother's death, the family relocated to Havre, MT, where the Campbell children were raised. He was a life-long member of Van 'Orsdel United Methodist Church, and was educated through Havre Public Schools. In January of 1947, Ken enlisted in the United States Air Force (U.S.A.F.), where he served as aircraft mechanic and engine specialist. He was stationed in Japan and Manila in the Philippines. After his honorable discharge, he was employed by Valley Motors, and later hired on with the Great Northern Railroad, working in the storehouse, and as a fireman and then as a locomotive engineer, where he retired after 42 years of service in February of 1992. He was a valuable member of the Community Relations Committee in Havre, serving the community by showing railroad safety films and sharing highway crossing safety programs with Havre High School driver's education programs as well as with Northern Montana College classes.
He met and married Betty Klungland, and they became parents to three children. Ken was always a family man who loved to go camping, fishing, hunting, and golfing. He was community-minded and was active in Elks Club; I.O.O.F (Oddfellows) where he served twice as Noble Grand of that organization; and he helped sponsor an eye foundation in Johns' Hopkins Hospital, He served many years in Mason's, the Shrine Oriental Band, and Scottish Rite. Ken helped with the local community drive of United Way of Hill County, and Demolay boys. He was a member of Blue
Horizon, Good Sam's, and amateur radio club as ham radio operator KC7NY. He was a kind man, ever ready to help a friend in need. We will miss his contagious smile, and the sunshine he brought into our lives.
