Obituary

Joseph Martin Conway "Joe" was born the "5th month, 6th day, of 47" (as he would say) to Raymond and Anna (Schlitz) Conway at their farm home by O'Neill, Nebraska.  He was the eldest of four children including Eugene "Gene", Theresa, and Albert "Bert" Conway.  Joe attended country school through eighth grade and graduated from St. Mary's High School/O'Neill in 1966.

After Joe's service years, he traveled to Minot, ND and later settled for a time in Wolf Point, MT, working on the oil rigs in those locations.  He enjoyed rodeo action in Wolf Point and met participants and some of the show clowns (early days of Moe Bandy prior to his western music career).

Joe met Linda Pearson after moving to Glasgow in 1971.  They became friends and "soulmates" and started dating, then later married June 16, 1973.  The couple had no children but shared their home with their pet dachshunds for more than thirty-five years.  These dogs had been a favorite of Linda's since her early childhood and Joe loved dogs and animals very much.  Glasgow was home to the couple for eighteen years before moving to Havre in 1991 to follow Linda's cable position there.

Joe worked over the years on building construction (the Lutheran Church/Glasgow), road construction in Glasgow and other areas in Montana, he worked on the pipeline river crossing by Sidney, and his most favored being the Northern Border Pipeline construction job north of Glasgow.  He enjoyed telling stories about crew members that he had worked with over the years.  Joe was also a proud and faithful member of the Long Run fire department in Glasgow, doing volunteer service with the Valley County crew for several years.  After moving to Havre, Joe worked in the warehouse at Schwan's Foods and performed custodial work at Bullhook Community Health Center.

Joe was very much a people person.  In Glasgow, he enjoyed league bowling at El Cor Del Lanes with fun-loving friends that always cheered on their competing teams.  He liked Halloween "dress up" among adults completely disguised.  They visited with patrons out for the evening who wondered just who they were talking to, which made the charade even more fun.  Joe's favorite role at holiday time was playing Santa to the school age kids when asked and dropping by (in Santa suit) to visit with friends and wish them a "Merry Christmas" on the 24th also.  In Havre, he usually visited senior friends at holiday with Christmas greetings and a sweet treat.  Joe never forgot his Irish heritage either, and enjoyed corned beef and cabbage dinners, and of course, he would wear his green tee shirt showing "Life's Too Short Not To Be Irish."  He wanted to carry on the tradition that he grew up with, from his old hometown of O'Neill known as "the Irish capital" of Nebraska.  Havre friends included Joe in their coffee group downtown, and he was happy to oblige.  He blended in well with the elder gentlemen who enjoyed his jokes and stories recalled from years past just as much as he liked hearing about their experiences.

After 2021, both Joe and Linda recovered from the covid epidemic, but some new health issues had started to take place with Joe by year's end 2022.  He was starting to have more mobility issues requiring a walker in 2023, as well as memory issues.  His health was declining and at the end of May 2025, he unknowingly had a heart attack and later learned – also an embolic stroke.  Following these attacks, Joe required help to use his walker and would make limited conversation with us.  The last two months of his life were spent in hospital between Great Falls and Havre, with a brief time at home, attended by home health care.   At age 78, Joe passed away at Northern Montana Hospital in Havre on August 7, 2025, after a couple of days in hospice care.  Joe was very ready to leave his life here on earth, as he shared with those around him.  Joe and Linda were married for 52 years.  He was very loved by family and friends and is very much missed, but we are thankful that he is at peace now.  Our faith teaches us that "though the chain is broken and nothing seems the same, that as God calls us one by one", we will reunite with Joe and our loved ones who have already passed into everlasting life in heaven – our true home.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond "Ray" and Anna "Ann" Conway; brother, Gene Conway; sister, Theresa (Conway) Nielsen; grandparents, Martin & Bertha Conway, and Joseph & Kathryn Schiltz; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Joe is survived by his wife, Linda; brother, Albert (Carol) Conway; and several Nephews and Nieces; and Great-Nephews and -Nieces, all children and families of Gene, Theresa, and Albert Conway.  Also surviving include nephew, Kelly (Gina) Nelson, niece, Heather (Randy) Begger, great-nieces, Kelsey & Josie Begger, and nephew, Brian (Barbara) Nelson, all families of sister-in-law, Sandy Nelson (who passed away on 5/1/2025).  Also very dear to Joe was his mother-in-law, Evelyn Pearson, who passed away in September 1999.

A memorial service for Joe will be set at a future date.
