James was born on November 19, 1990 in Havre, Montana to Leona and Ronald Swan. James attended Rocky Boy Schools his whole life, graduating from High School in 2009. After High School, he entered service in the United States Navy and was later honorably discharged. After discharge, he briefly attended Stone Child College, majoring in Natural Resources.

James will be forever remembered by his family and friends for his sense of humor, although ridiculous, he always made everyone laugh. He spent his days going on adventures with the love of his life, Tiffany and their puppy Phoebe. They loved to hunt and fish, go camping, and drive around the Bear Paw Mountains. James also loved playing video games and met some great friends on Xbox Live. Driving was one of James' passions in life, he especially loved to cruise his Ford Mustang around for hours. He eventually found a job with the Rocky Boy Health Board as a Transportation Driver that combined his passion for driving and helping people. He later continued his passion for helping people by working as Office Manager for the Chippewa Cree Tribal Child Support Program before his health required him to retire.

James was the best road trip partner, combining his eclectic taste in music and nerdy dance moves to provide hours of entertainment. James, Tiffany, Brian, and Jamie went on many long road trips to concerts and even one to watch the New York Yankees to see one of Derek Jeter's final games. He also loved the Oakland Raiders, and in fact, still owes Jamie $50 for their failed attempt at the Super Bowl. He was always confident that this was their year. James also fancied himself a chef, spending many hours trying to perfect his menudo recipe. He always had a bottle of hot sauce nearby.

By far the best thing about James was his love for his family and his friends. He cared so deeply about those he loved, he loved and admired his dad more than anything, spending his Sundays watching football with him rooting for the Griz and the Raiders. He started the process to donate his niece a kidney and was so upset when he found out that he wasn't a candidate. James' passing will leave a void in everyone's life and no day will ever go by without us thinking about him and the smile he left on all of our faces.

James was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents James and Madeline Oats, paternal grandparents Charles and Margaret Swan, uncles Kenny Stump and Robert "Bob" Swan.

Survivors include his parents, Ronald and Leona Swan, his wife Tiffany Louis-Clark, brothers Russell Houle Jr., Leon Houle, and Dustin Webster all of Rocky Boy, MT. His sisters Heather (Charles LaFromboise) Oats, Jamie (Brian) Molina, Ashley Oats all of Rocky Boy, MT, Sherri (Mike Thomas) Swan of Chandler, AZ, Susan (Ken) Hale of Havre, MT, Rose (Evin Carr) Swan of an RV somewhere in America, Katherine (Joe Weber) Swan of Missoula, MT, and Rachel (Trent) Swan-Harding of Des Moines, IA. Along with many relatives and friends too numerous to name.
