James "Jim" Greytak, was born on June 6, 1932, in Havre, Montana, to Albert Greytak and Gladys Thompson Greytak. He was raised on the family farm north of Havre with his eleven siblings. The family farm is where his love of the land and strong work ethic were formed.
Jim graduated from Havre High School in 1950 and spent three years serving in the United States Army following graduation. After his service, he returned home to the family farm, where he worked his entire life—first alongside his father and later with his son, Doug. Jim continued driving the grain truck until nearly ninety years old, finally slowing down only a few years ago.
Jim was a great neighbor and a true friend to many. He was known for his kindness, quiet nature, and dry sense of humor, often delivered in thoughtful one-liners. He genuinely cared about others and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
An artist with metal, Jim could often be found in his shop building and creating. He loved working with his hands and built three tractors, grain truck boxes, and countless custom pieces for the farm. If something was needed, Jim could fabricate it. Neighbors frequently relied on his skills to build or repair equipment, and Jim always helped with a smile.
Jim loved fast cars and wasn't afraid to test their limits. He also liked his vehicles to look good—a trait that extended to his farm equipment. His trucks and tractors were always kept clean and in tip-top condition.
Jim married the love of his life, Sandra "Sandy" Lumsden, on October 20, 1979. Together they shared a life rooted in love, family, and faith. They were blessed with one son, Douglas (Doug) Greytak, and daughter-in-law Jenny. Jim was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and uncle.
Jim also cherished his "surrogate grandchildren," Great Neices: Gracie, Mary, Cassie, and Ashlyn Gibson. He faithfully attended their birthday parties, baptisms, confirmations, and Christmas programs, supporting them with quiet pride and steady love.
Jim loved music and especially loved to sing. He often hummed while working in his shop and was a member of the St. Jude's Choir, where he found great joy singing in church. A man of deep faith, Jim read his Bible daily, prayed the rosary, and believed Sunday was a day devoted to God. He lived by a strong set of values grounded in faith, humility, and service to others.
He is survived by his wife Sandra (Sandy) Greytak; his son Doug Greytak (Jenny); his siblings Cathy (Wade) Bickford, Havre; Don Greytak, Havre; Carol Boyce, Warrick; Pat (Nick) Faber Cleaveland; Tom (Diane) Greytak, Red Lodge, Karen Norsworthy, Cheyenne; Judy (Jerry) Somdahl, California; Susie Stai, Billings; Bill (Patty) Greytak, Havre; Debbie (Mike) Lee, Helena; sisters-in-law Donna Greytak, Gilford; Bernie (Les) Anderson, Havre; along with many nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors who will miss him dearly.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Greytak and Gladys Thompson Greytak, parents-in-law Dale and Joyce Lumsden, his brother, Bob Greytak, Brothers-in-law Bud Boyce; Larry Norsorthy; Willard Stai and special "granddaughter" Gracie Gibson.
