Iona was born on February 1, 1938, in Val Marie, Saskatchewan, to Frank and Talia (Trottier) Azure. Her mother passed away when she was young, and Iona attended school during her earlier years in Pierre, SD, and high school in Harlem. She attended Aaniiih Nakoda College, where she received her Associates degree in business. Iona was on the Dean's List while attending ANC.

On June 10, 1971, Iona married Charles Lee "Chuck" Schilling, and the couple raised their four children in Harlem, where Iona worked at the VFW, as the City Clerk, at Buttrey's and Albertson's, and as a daycare provider, business partner with her husband of C & I Painting and Auto Repair, and owner of the Spa Bar.

She was a happy woman with a great sense of humor who enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and crafting (especially with glitter). Some of her favorite shows were murder mysteries and Alfred Hitchcock. Iona was very family-oriented, so family gatherings were a favorite pastime, and fishing with Chuck was always a treat. She was an active member of the VFW Auxiliary. She was an active weather watcher on TV because she did not like storms.

Iona was preceded in death by her daughter Roberta Raye Azure; parents, Frank & Tillie Azure; sisters, Ruby Romero, Anna Fetter, and Pearl Swan; and brothers, Gordon Azure, and Frank Azure.

She is survived by her husband Chuck Schilling of Harlem; children Andrea Quintana of Harlem, Aaron and Joe Azure of Havre, Eileen Schilling of Harlem; grandchildren, Talia Bell Grant, Roberta Quintana, Weslyn (Veronica) Schilling of Harlem, Shawn (Claire) Tsosie of San Francisco, CA, Jay Tsosie & Autumn (Steven) Azure of Missoula, Christine (Victor) Schilling of Havre, Madison Cole of Harlem, and Lecia (Javier) Pronto of Billings; great-grandchildren, Desmond and Caleb Grant, Tierra Bella Quintana, Maliki, Lincoln & Jaxtyn Schilling-Tangen, Dontez Lone Bear, Marena, Hazel and Rebecca Gone, Luna and Harper Pflaum, and Simone Tsosie; brothers, Alan Azure of Polson, Bob Azure of Butte, and Frank "Pockets" Azure of Washington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
