Inetia Mae
Cantin
September 29, 1926 – September 4, 2025
INETIA MAE (IRVIN) CANTIN
Inetia Mae (Irvin) Cantin, 98 (just short of her 99th birthday), of Gladstone, Oregon, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2025, with her daughter Sharon by her side. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Inetia will be remembered for her humor, her creativity, and her unwavering love for her family.
Born on September 29, 1926, in Lincoln, Nebraska, Inetia grew up during tough times that shaped her caring and resilient spirit. On October 12, 1943, just weeks after her 17th birthday, she married the love of her life, Merlin Cantin, in Lewistown, Montana. Their story began at the local roller rink and soon blossomed into a lifelong partnership. Only five days after their wedding, Merl left for Europe to serve in World War II, while Inetia lived with his family in Portland, Oregon, until his return. Together they raised four children and built a loving home filled with warmth and laughter.
Inetia's life was rich with hobbies and creativity. A passionate bowler, she played on leagues well into her 80s and was known to choose moving to a new town based on whether it had a bowling alley. She enjoyed pinochle, oil painting, cake decorating, and crocheting afghans for loved ones. Her paintings – mountain scenes, wildlife, and seascapes – reflected her keen eye for beauty. A proud member of the Havre Art Association, her artistry brought joy to many.
Throughout her life, Inetia and Merl made homes across the West, from Oregon to Montana to Arizona, always guided by family ties. Even in her later years, she remained full of wit and laughter, often joking that she "couldn't possibly be that old."
Inetia is survived by her daughters, Linda Warneke, Sharon (Lynn) Withers, and Pam (Terry)Voltz, along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother, Elisabeth "Betty" Owens; stepfather, Herb Owens; her beloved husband, Merl; son, Leslie; and son-in-law, Bill Warneke.
A graveside service will be held Friday, October 24, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Highland Cemetery in Havre, Montana, followed by a luncheon at the Best Western Great Northern Inn Conference Room. All are welcome to attend and share memories of a truly remarkable woman. Inetia's family has suggested memorial donations be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Holland & Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with services and arrangements.
