Benson Sutherland, Sr.
January 11, 1940 – March 14, 2020
Henry B. "PeJohn" Sutherland, Sr., 80, passed away due to natural causes at his residence on Saturday, March 14, 2020. Wake services will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, 2020, and will continue until his funeral service, which will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 17, 2020, all at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the Sutherland Family Cemetery. Holland & Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. PeJohn was born on January 11, 1940, in Rocky Boy to Thomas and Rose (Pepin) Saddler. He was raised in Rocky Boy, graduating from Box Elder High School in 1958. Soon after, he attended the Vo-tech in Butte, where he received his certification in heavy equipment operation. PeJohn married Joyce Four Souls in 1967 in Rocky Boy. For most of his working years, he worked as a heavy equipment operator and over the road truck driver. He received his certification as an EMT in 1976, but continued his over the road work until 2010, when he retired. At that time, he began working for the Rocky Boy Senior Center driving bus until 2019.
PeJohn was an outgoing man who enjoyed shooting beavers at the bridge, playing his guitar and the drums, and teasing his family. He adored his great-grandson Zayden, whom PeJohn called The Bear, and spent as much time with him as he could. He was very fluent in both Chippewa and Cree.
He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce Sutherland; son, Marvin Gardipee; granddaughter, Breanna Gardipee; parents, Tom and Rose Saddler; brothers, Edward Saddler, and George, Richard, Louis, and Dennis Sutherland; sisters, Laura and Rosalee Bautista, Lily Rania, Elizabeth Denny, Delma Sutherland, and Geneva Houle; and adopted brothers, Albert LaMere and Samuel Descharme.
PeJohn is survived by his children, Henry "Baby John" Sutherland, Jr., Dennis "Weaver" Sutherland, and Melissa Sutherland, all of Rocky Boy, and Lilian Swan of Spokane, WA; stepsons, Jeffrey and Arnold (Dixie) Four Souls of Rocky Boy; adopted sons, Levi Ford and Weston Sutherland; adopted daughter, Delray Molina; 15 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 3 godchildren; sister, Helen Molina; brother, Daniel "Biddo" Sutherland; adopted brothers, Leon "Blackie" Sutherland and Victor Patacsil; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.
