Obituary

Helen Yuille Richter

Helen Yuille Richter, 84, of Big Sandy, Montana, passed away on January 27, 2026, at the Big Sandy Medical Center Nursing Home.
Helen was born April 16, 1941, in Barnard Castle, Durham County, England, to Douglas and Helena Caldwell, and was raised in Crook, Durham County. From her earliest days, she knew she was meant to be a nurse - caring for others wasn't just a profession for Helen, it was simply who she was.

After completing her nursing training in orthopedics, general nursing, and midwifery in England, Helen embarked on an adventure that would shape the rest of her life. In July 1967, she and her dear friend Elizabeth Martin were recruited by Dr. Murphy, an Irish physician in Big Sandy, Montana, who needed nurses trained in midwifery and rural medicine. The two young British women flew to New York City, spent their first night in Times Square, then boarded a train bound for Havre, Montana. The next day, walking through the small Hi-Line town that would become home, they counted five churches and five bars. They looked at each other and said, "We'll give it a week."

She stayed for nearly sixty years.

Helen worked at the Big Sandy Medical Center, first in the hospital, where she and Elizabeth became regarded as legends in the community. On December 31, 1975, she married Vernon Richter, the Big Sandy pharmacist, gaining five stepchildren and later welcoming their son, Douglas. When Vern needed her help at the Owl Pharmacy in Havre, she stepped away from nursing for nearly a decade before returning to the Medical Center to work in the clinic. In all, she dedicated approximately fifty years to healthcare, retiring on April 15, 2016 - one day before her 75th birthday.

Helen became a naturalized American citizen in September 1993, but Big Sandy had claimed her heart long before that.

To know Helen was to be fed by Helen. "Sit down dear, dig in love," she'd say, and a visit to her home meant consuming at least 5,000 calories of wonderful food - she wouldn't have it any other way. She loved hosting gatherings and had a gift for making everyone feel like family - because to her, they were. People adored her Queen's English accent, and she could often be found working on complex puzzles that took over the entire dining room table, or gazing at the mountains from her window or porch. But Helen was never one for relaxation. She was a busybody in the best sense - someone who cared so deeply for others that she often forgot to care for herself. A true self-sacrificing soul who gave everything she had to her family, her patients, and her beloved community.

Helen is survived by her son, Douglas Vernon Richter (Sarah) of Minnesota; adopted daughter, Trish Greff; stepchildren, Rhett (Pearl) Richter of Laurel, Montana and Janine (Stan) Holmquist of Great Falls, Montana; daughters-in-law, Jane Richter and Julie Richter; grandchildren, Anders, Annika, and Greta Richter; step-grandchildren, Jeffrey and Jon (Clarke's), Jeremy, Jesse, Liesl, and Ahren (Rick's), Katherine and Jane (Mike's), Jenessa and Adam (Rhett's), and Brett, Wes, and Ramie (Janine's); and her sister, Katharine Yuille Fudge of Perth, Australia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Richter; stepchildren, Clarke, Richard, and Michael Richter; step-granddaughter, Kelly; and dear friend, Elizabeth Martin.

A celebration of life and funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at 10:30 AM at the Richter residence. In the event of inclement weather, the service will be held at Christ Lutheran Church in Big Sandy.
