Obituary

Georgiana Peggy Roasting Stick, No-To-Kweo-Sahs-Kah-On (Old Woman's Cane), a name given to her by Chief Rocky Boy's brother, Mah-Ki-Si-T, 87, passed away due to natural causes at her residence on Thursday, October 21, 2021.  Wake services will begin at 3:00 p.m., on Friday, October 22, 2021, and will continue until her funeral service, which will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 23, 2021, all at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church with Earl Arkinson officiating.  Burial will follow in the Rocky Boy Cemetery.  Holland & Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

Peggy was born on August 9, 1934, in Rocky Boy to George and Babe (Mechance) Gopher, while visiting family in Rocky Boy.  After her birth, they returned to Hill 57 outside of Great Falls, where Peggy attended Franklin Elementary School.  In 1954, Peggy married John Roasting Stick, and the couple made their home in Rocky Boy where they raised their family.  For the majority of her life, Peggy was a homemaker, caring for her home and family while her husband worked.  She recently became certified in Class 7 Cree Language.

Peggy enjoyed handgame, sewing traditional items, beadwork, playing machines, picking berries, Sudoku puzzles, and cooking, especially traditional food.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Roasting Stick, Sr.; children, Anthony Richard Gopher, Debbie (Roasting Stick) Simon, and Dean Roasting Stick; a stillborn granddaughter; a great-grandson, Roary John Michael Roasting Stick; and parents, George and Babe Gopher.

Peggy is survived by her daughters, Rachel Roasting Stick of Mescalero, NM, JonAnn Roasting Stick of Havre, and Holly Roasting Stick of Rocky Boy; sons, John Jr., Richard, Thomas (Diane), and Samuel (Sheila) Roasting Stick, all of Rocky Boy; twenty-five grandchildren; thirty-two great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister, Phyllis (Kenneth) Parker of Rocky Boy; brothers, James and Paul Gopher, both of Helena; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.
