Obituary

G ary Boyd Brill

June 12, 1946 – January 31, 2026

Gary Boyd Brill, a man of remarkable intelligence, curiosity, and quiet kindness, passed away on January 31, 2026, in Great Falls, Montana. Born on June 12, 1946, in Havre, Montana, Gary was the son of Charles Brill and Mildred Hyslop, both of whom preceded him in death. Havre was always home to Gary, a place he spoke of fondly and carried with him throughout his life.

Gary had an insatiable curiosity about the world, spirituality and philosophy. He seemed to know something about almost everything, and his sharp mind, thoughtful observations, and love of learning made conversations with him so engaging. He was especially passionate about history, Native American culture, vintage airplanes and seeking inner peace—interests that reflected both his respect for the past and his fascination with how things worked.

He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War as a member of the 497th Tactical Fighter Squadron, known as the "Night Owls." After his military service, Gary went on to build a long and accomplished career as an airplane mechanic, working for both United Airlines and Alaska Airlines before retiring.

Gary was a devoted dog lover and shared a special bond with his dear friend's dog, Chance, who brought him great joy and companionship. He valued friendship and spoke often of the meaningful relationships he formed throughout his life, especially those from his hometown of Havre.

Gary lived in California for many years before returning home to Havre, Montana, in 2023—a return that brought him comfort and a sense of belonging. He is lovingly remembered by his close friends Tara and Eric Hyde, Linda Rushing, Riley Hyde, and Taylor Hyde, as well as many others located in Havre, Montana, and Alameda and Castro Valley, California.

Gary will be remembered for his intelligent mind, gentle spirit, deep loyalty, and enduring love for learning and the people and places that shaped him. He will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
