Emil was born November 19, 1925, in Laredo, MT, to Samuel and Christina (Bochee) Kampf. He was raised in Laredo until he was 11 when his father died, and the family moved to Havre. Emil graduated from Havre High School in 1943, where he enjoyed golfing, winning the Havre City Golf Championship in 1941 and 1942. He entered the US Navy in August of 1943, and served until his honorable discharge in 1946. After his discharge, Emil returned to Havre and began his 40+ year career working for the Great Northern Railroad, which then became Burlington Northern before he retired in the late 1980s. While working for the railroad, he met Oletta "Peggy" Horsley, who worked in the Beanery there. The couple married in 1962, and Peggy brought her ready-made family in the form of her four children with her. Soon after, the couple added to their family with a set of twins.
Following his retirement, Emil enjoyed his daily golfing and daily treadmill walks, but he loved spending time with his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Beaver Creek Golf Course from 1951 through the remainder of his life, and in 2008, was named a Beaver Creek Golf Course Lifetime member and awarded free membership, which thrilled him to no end. Emil was also one of the men that took out the sand greens and exchanged them for the grass greens.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Peggy Kampf in 2015; his parents Samuel and Christina Kampf; his five sisters, Alvina, Emma, Lila, Mildred, and Laura; and his five brothers, Oscar, John, William, Sam, and Benjamin.
He is survived by his children, Jill (Lyle) Miller and Jack Kampf, of Havre, Allan Horsley of Bagley, MN, Arlyne (Mark) Chvilicek and Annette Horsley, of Havre, and Alton "Rocky" (Summer) Horsley of Glen, MT; his fourteen grandchildren; his twenty-four great-grandchildren; his daughters-in-law, Dianne Horsley of Bagley, MN, and Paula Hunthausen of East Helen; his son-in-law Tom Heninger of Havre; his brother Ted Kampf of Utah; and numerous nieces and nephews.
