Obituary

Elsie Rose Mitchell, 83, passed away due to natural causes at Northern Montana Hospital on Monday, June 20, 2022.  A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, with burial to follow in the Rocky Boy Cemetery.  Holland & Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

Elsie was born on January 6, 1939, in Fort Belknap to Paul and Leona (Nomee) Mitchell.  She was raised in Rocky Boy, attending school there.  Elsie attended Flandreau Indian School for high school, graduating in 1958.  After high school, she attended Midland College in Pennsylvania, obtaining her associate's degree in business.  For many years, she worked with disabled children before moving to Billings to work for the Indian Health Services there.  When her mother passed away, Elsie returned to Rocky Boy, where she worked in tribal government and then for IHS.  She retired in 2010.  She then provided care for her brother Rusty until he passed away.

Elsie was a loving, giving woman with a heart of gold.  She loved to travel, especially to Pow Wows, and she loved buying jewelry there.  She was very humorous, but also very spunky.  Her upbringing was traditional, and she followed that way of life; but she was also very active in Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, where she was the "choir leader", served on the church board for many years, and wrote all of the thank you notes for the church.  Elsie loved her family, and time spent with them was treasured.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Leona Mitchell; sisters, Alice Conklin and Mary Margaret Johnson; and brothers, John Lorin Mitchell, Robert Mitchell, Wallace Mitchell, and Russell "Rusty" Mitchell.

Elsie is survived by her numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, whom she took as her own; many extended family; and many, many friends.
