Obituary

Edward Grill, 93, of Harlem passed away on Tuesday, December 23, 2014, of natural causes at Sweet Home in Chinook. Ed was born on January 25, 1921, in Ramona, KS, to Henry and Katherine (Krause) Grill. When he was young, the family relocated to Milwaukee, WI, and Ed attended school there. Following his school years, he attended a Vo-Tech school for shoemaking, and he went to work for Green Debaugm Tanning in Milwaukee. In 1942, Ed enlisted in the US Navy, and served until his honorable discharge in 1945. He was stationed on the USS SeaDragon for the majority of his service, and was based out of Pearl Harbor. Upon his discharge, Ed relocated to Harlem where he met and fell in love with Rose Marie Andrews. The couple was married in 1946, and their union was blessed with five daughters. The couple remained in Harlem, where Ed purchased the Catholic Church in Savoy and moved it to Harlem. Ed used the building as a starting structure for his family home and continually added always making room for the wonderful children his Savior blessed him with. Ed was a very active man in his working days. His shoemaking career continued upon his return from the Navy. He also served as a Chief of Police and Fire Chief in Harlem. Ed worked for over 20 years for the government as an IHS Maintenance Supervisor, and served on the City Council in Harlem, during which time he was very instrumental in getting the streets of Harlem paved. Ed retired in 1980, and lost his beloved Rose in 1997. Ed enjoyed golfing, horseshoes, bowling and fishing. His winter months were filled with watching westerns and building beautiful woodwork for those he loved, from trunks to chest, and china closets to furniture. He adored his family, and time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren was cherished. In October of 2013, Ed needed more care than his family could provide, and entered the Sweet Home in Chinook. He received outstanding care from the whole staff that loved and cared for Ed during this difficult season of his life. He kept the staff and others laughing at his humorous outlook on life. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Rose; his daughter Rita Grill; his parents Henry and Katy Grill; his two sisters Vera Baumbach and Mary Hillard; and his three brothers Henry, Alex, and Godfried Grill. He is survived by his daughters Gloria (Jerry) Jansma of Ponca City, OK, Sally (Dan) O'Leary and Patsy (Kenny) Shelhamer, all of Harlem, and Sherri (Craig) Manley of Robertsdale, AL; his grandchildren, Jen (Eric) Shumar of Anchorage, AK, Michael (Lorissa) Jansma of Ponca City, OK, Jayne (Aaron) Morrow of Poolesville, MD, Frank (Angie) Billmayer of Chinook, Brandi Olszewski of Zap, ND, Tara (Jeremy) Miller of Saginaw, TX, Cory Shelhamer of Malta, Morgan (David) Sanders of Sanford, NC and Max Manley of NC; ; his great-grandchildren, Kastner and Olivia Shumar, Kianna and Ty Jansma, Anna and Liam Morrow, Bridger and Bowman Billmayer, Kadin and Madison Hafner, and Jase, Emma, Aiden and Brooklynn Miller; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Ernie, Al and Steve Grill of Milwaukee, WI.
