Obituary

Duncan Standing Rock, Sr., 86, passed away due to natural causes at his Rocky Boy residence on Sunday, February 28, 2021.  Wake services will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 1, and will continue until his funeral service which will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 2, 2021, all at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.  Burial will follow in the Standing Rock Family Cemetery.  Holland & Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

Duncan was born on July 22, 1934, at Parker Canyon in Rocky Boy.  He was raised at Rocky Boy and Havre, attending school outside of Loma.  He married Victoria Delorne while a young man, and the couple had 12 children.  Victoria passed away in 1994, and a couple of years later, Duncan married Francine Laplant.  He adopted Francine's daughter, and they had a daughter together.  Francine passed away in 2012.

While young, Duncan worked on the Great Northern Railroad for a time, and discovered that that work just wasn't for him.  He worked for about 20 years as a paralegal for legal services in Havre, then served on the Chippewa Cree Tribal Council for three terms.  Most recently, he worked in the Chippewa Cree Tribal Cultural Preservation Department, and as a consultant with the Little Shell Tribe on language preservation.

Duncan was a social man, who loved visiting and teasing his family and friends.  He was very musical, playing his guitar and singing at every opportunity.  He also enjoyed hiking, yardwork, and collecting various things.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Victoria and Francine Standing Rock; children Roger, Maureen, and Keith Standing Rock, and an infant daughter; parents, Joe Standing Rock, Ruby Crazy Boy, and Charlie Writing Bird; adoptive parents, Mike and Mary Snake; brothers, Henry Standing Rock, Richard Well Off Man, Kenny Writing Bird, and his twin brother, David Standing Rock; and sisters, Ruby Stump, Mary Jane Eagleman, Caroline Gray, Margaret Weaving, Wilberta "Babe" Lee, and Amy Writing Bird.

Duncan is survived by his children, Norma Oats, Elsie Standing Rock, and Duncan Standing Rock, Jr, all of Missoula, Valerie Standing Rock of Rocky Boy, Vickie Standing Rock of Missoula, Barbara (Pete) Sutherland of Rocky Boy, Trent (Jessica Koop) of Miles City, Brent Standing Rock of Spokane, Doranda Annie Standing Rock of Missoula, Nicole Standing Rock of Rocky Boy, and Irene (Dale) Marceau of Browning; numerous grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; brothers Joe Saddler of Phoenix, AZ, and John Well Off Man of Santa Fe, NM; sister, Ruby Well Off Man of Seattle, WA; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and other adoptive and extended family and friends.
