Douglas Wayne Johnson, 66, died Saturday, June 29, 2013 at his home in Fort Belknap as a result of diabetes. His wake service will begin Monday, July 1, 2013 at the family residence of 410 Flathead Street In Fort Belknap. His traditional Funeral Service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at the Red Whip with burial to follow on Ocean Hill. Services and arrangements have been entrusted to Holland & Bonine Funeral Home. Douglas "Doug" was born October 14, 1946 to Bernice (Blackbird) and Edgar Johnson. He had five brothers and seven sisters. He lived most of his life in Fort Belknap. On November 20, 1964 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he was assigned to the USS McMorris an escort ship that he lived on for four years. During the Vietnam Conflict his ship covered the shores of Vietnam and received the Vietnam Service Medal. He was honorably discharged on December 12, 1969. On February 1, 1970 he married Kathryn Stiffarm and they had nine children. Doug worked for the Tribal Bureau of Indian Affairs and Indian Health Services where he retired after an injury on the job. Doug had many interests and wasn't afraid to tackle a new hobby. He enjoyed listening to his Pow Wow and ABBA music, hunting, playing video games, going on the Pow Wow trail where he met up with the Ben Gay Boys. He was a traditional pipe maker and a certified locksmith. He was a member of the Fort Belknap Ambulance Crew, Volunteer Fire Department, a Police Officer, and a member of Post 110. A Little League Coach, Doug had a full life and touched many lives and was blessed with many friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Abbie Johnson; granddaughter Alex Marie Castillo; great-grandson Zayden Longknife; aunts: Peggy Ball, Angela Denny, Arlene Sandoval, Jean Campbell, and Leona Small; uncle George Blackbird; grandparents: Manny, George and Ella Blackbird, Lucy and Ben Johnson, and Steve Cochran; and his extended families: Strike, Small, Denny, Blackbird, Berry and Mounts. Doug is survived by his wife Kathryn Johnson of Fort Belknap, his children and their spouses whom he regarded as his children: Lee (Marvin) Gray, Mardell (Adam) Castillo, and Bernice (Martin) Strait, all of Fort Belknap, Eleanor (Jay) Eagleman of Rocky Boy, Diane and Leslie Brian, Steve, Joe Jr. and Jon Weasel, and Mary (Roger) White, all of Fort Belknap; his brothers and sisters: Ival (Danielle), Ben (Judy), Stan (Joan), Edgar (Jeannie), and Elgrin Johnson, all of Fort Belknap; Abby Woodenleg, Maxine Clifford, Vivian Herschel, Vikki Johnson, Roberta (Doug) Messerly, and Thea Kirkaldie, all of Fort Belknap; 28 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren He is also survived by his special friends, Ed Nicholson, Ron Speakthunder, Wayne Herschell, John Bearcub, Steve Fox and Andy Werk, Sr., together with many beloved family and friends too numerous to name.
