Obituary

DeWayne T. Haas, 77, passed away due to natural causes at his residence on Monday, January 12, 2026.  He was surrounded by his family.  Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of DeWayne's life will be held this summer.  DeWayne's family has suggested memorial donations be made to Bear Paw Hospice or the charity of the donor's choice. Holland & Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

DeWayne was born on September 14, 1948, in Havre to Tommy and Clara (Champagne) Haas, the first son of nine children.  He graduated from Havre High School in 1967, and entered the US Army in 1968, serving in Korea until his honorable discharge.  Upon DeWayne's return home in 1970, he began working for Burlington Northern, and in 1971, he married Bonnie Opperud.  The couple made their home in Havre, raising their 3 children there.   While working, DeWayne attended Northern Montana College from 1976 – 1978, majoring in business administration.  Over the years, he worked his way up to pipefitter, a job he enjoyed working with friends who were like family, until his work accident in 2004.  At that time, he sustained severe injuries which rendered him disabled.

In his younger years, DeWayne enjoyed hunting and fishing.  He taught himself to play guitar, and playing became a favorite pastime as well as singing everywhere.  In his later years, he enjoyed yardwork, his "projects", and tinkering around in the garage.  He always enjoyed painting and working on cars.  DeWayne was a study in contradictions … he was a very serious man but was always teasing.  He possessed a wicked sense of humor and loved to give nicknames to everyone.  As the oldest in his family, DeWayne was a caretaker, and due to his many hobbies, he was a jack of all trades, but a master of none.

He was preceded in death by his son, Brandan Haas; parents Tommy and Clara Haas; siblings, Ronald Haas, Beverly Haas, Rodney Haas, Kenneth "Robin" Haas, and Judy Osborne; parents-in-law, Leonard and Mona Belle Opperud; and sister-in-law, Virginia Naber.

DeWayne is survived by his wife, Bonnie Haas of Havre; children, Jeanette (Josh) Wierzbicki and Shelcee (Nathan) Graves, all of Havre; grandchildren, Madi Graves, Jalyn (Jarah) Kinsella, and Jadyn Wierzbicki; sister, Daryle (Steve) Bradley; brothers, Randy (Mardi) Haas and Timothy (Wanda) Haas; in-laws, Carol (Pat) Graham, and Duane Naber; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
