Sutherland
November 2, 1930 – December 6, 2021
Clifford A. Sutherland, 91, passed away peacefully due to natural causes at his residence on Monday, December 6, 2021. Wake services will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 7, 2021, and will continue until his funeral service, which will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 9, 2021, all at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the Warriors Burial Grounds. Holland & Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
Clifford was born on November 2, 1930, in Rocky Boy, to Pete and Angeline (Denny) Sutherland. He was raised in Rocky Boy, attending school there. In 1950, he entered the US Army, and served in Korea until his honorable discharge in 1953. After his military service, he returned home and married the love of his life, Lydia Mitchell, and the couple was married for 66 years until Lydia's passing in November of 2020. Clifford worked for many years to provide for his family, his most recent job being the first director of the Chippewa Cree Veteran's Center. He was the oldest Chippewa Cree member, and the last Chippewa Cree Korean War veteran.
He enjoyed yardwork and working his crossword puzzles. In his younger years, he liked playing his harmonica and guitar, listening to music, and watching the Notebook, especially with Lydia.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lydia; children, Clifford Jr. and Linda; granddaughter, Jennifer DeCoteau Chiefstick; parents, Pete and Angeline Sutherland; and siblings, June Cox, Sharon Zampich, Anges Swan, Karen Doney, Peter "Shano" Sutherland, and Pearl Shendo.
Clifford is survived by his children, Pete (Barb) Sutherland, and Faith, Kathy, and Phillip Sutherland, all of Rocky Boy; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Frieda Ameline and Daniel "Biddo" Sutherland, both of Rocky Boy, and Marie Wilson of Great Falls; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.
