Carol was born on October 26, 1958, in Fort Belknap to Harold and Theresa (Cuts the Rope) Werk. She was raised in Hays, attending the Mission grade school and Hays Lodge Pole high school. She married Dale Doney, and the couple had three children, adopting many others over the years, especially troubled boys. Over the next 14 years, Carol worked, raised children with Dale, and attended Northern Montana College. She graduated in 1990 with her Bachelor's Degree in interdisciplinary studies. She worked as an adolescent counselor for Fort Belknap, the Dean of Students at Hays Lodge Pole, and most recently at IHS for many years in several different positions. Carol retired in 2010, having cared for many, many people over the years.
When she was younger, Carol was quite the cowgirl, breaking horses and riding whenever she could. Once she began her own family, her husband and family were her whole world. Her grandchildren were untouchable when she was around, as the cared for them and for her children like a mama bear. She was kind and loving, making her a wonderful mother and counselor. Carol was also a devoted Catholic and a very strong woman as she battled her illness, but was uplifting to others who were ill. She was very selfless, raising money for cancer even while sick. Carol's free time was spent cheering on the Thunderbirds at sporting events, shopping at rummage sales, especially for shoes and purses, and playing BINGO and the machines.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Theresa Werk; brother, Francis Werk; brothers-in-law, Joe Monteau, Dan Racine, and Hank Doney; father-in-law, Clifford Doney, Sr.; and uncle, Moses Nez Perce.
Carol is survived by her husband, Dale Doney of Hays; children, Adam (Anny) Doney, Joe (Kristina) Hawley, Theresa Doney, Lindsay (Mark) Messerly, and J.D. (Mary) LaSarte; eight grandchildren, Katey, Lexus, Jarren, Mia, Chevelle, Addyson, and Dustin; two great-grandchildren, Kaison and Jayden; her adopted children whom she adored; sisters, Joan (Don) Racine, Evie (Austin Healy) Werk, Tammy Werk, Anne Racine, Maggie Werk, and Vivian (Paul) Webb; three brothers, Harold (Michelle) Werk, Jr., Jim (Kim) Werk, and Toby (Liz) Werk; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Doney; aunts, Florence Fox and Gert Werk; adopted father Melvin (Geri) Rutherford; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.
