Betty Jo Spotted Horse, 54, passed away due to natural causes at a residence on Thursday, September 16, 2021. Wake services will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 16, 2021, and will continue until her funeral service, which will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 17, 2021, all at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church with Russell Standing Rock officiating. Burial will follow in the Rocky Boy Cemetery. Holland & Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
Betty Jo was born on December 7, 1966, in Fort Belknap to Louie and Angela (Blackbird) Denny. She was raised in Rocky Boy and Havre, attending Rocky Boy Elementary and Havre Middle and High Schools. After high school graduation, Betty Jo moved to Great Falls where she attended the Mays College of Business. She married Mark Spotted Horse in the late 80s and the couple had two children before divorcing in 2004. They lived in Great Falls for several years, and then moved to Rocky Boy, where Betty Jo attended Stone Child College and then Montana State University-Northern, from which she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in business. For several years, Betty Jo worked as a medical records clerk for the Rocky Boy Clinic. She then began working as the payroll clerk for the Chippewa Cree Tribe, a position she held until last year.
Betty Jo was a kind-hearted, fun-loving woman who enjoyed online Bingo, playing the machines, beading, reading, and playing pool. She had many friends, and loved spending time with them and her children, whom she delighted in teasing. She was a truly outgoing woman who excelled at making friends, and who looked forward to traveling, especially to attend Pow Wows.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Louie and Angela Denny; Darrell "Juggie" Denny; sister, Wilburta Denny; aunts, Helen and Jennette; uncles, Richard, and Victor; and nephew, Dani Buffalo.
Betty Jo is survived by her children, Dannette Spotted Horse of Billings and Taylor Spotted Horse of Rocky Boy; adopted son, Josiah (Maria Heavy Runner) Taylor of Mandaree, ND; daughter, Shalom Denny of Great Falls; grandchildren, Marquell Houle, Genesis Tail, and Rolan Spotted Horse; adopted mother, Pearl Whitford of Rocky Boy; sisters, Iris Buffalo and Ona Denny of Rocky Boy, June Gerig of South Dakota, and Ann Denny of Frazier; brothers, Bruce Denny of Lodgepole, Robert Stump, Sr. of Rocky Boy, George "Todd" (Verna) Denny of Fort Belknap, and Joe (Loranda) Lafromboise of Rocky Boy; maternal uncle, Walter Blackbird; work buddy, Theresa Lafromboise; pool shark buddy, Richard Schmockel; best friends, the Tripe Girls, Althea, Juanita, Jackie, and Laurie Gopher; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.
