Stubby was born on March 23, 1960, in Poplar to Verner and Elaine (Bear) Sears. He was raised in Poplar until he was two years old, and his family moved to Los Angeles. They remained there until Stubby was 12, and then they returned to Wolf Point, where he graduated from high school in 1978. Soon after, Stubby enlisted in the Army, serving a term of service, and returning home for a few years, at which time he re-enlisted, serving in the 82nd Airborne until his discharge in 1992. Once again, he returned to Wolf Point where he met the love of his life, Reva Doney. The couple married and he treated her three boys like his own, raising them alongside the adopted two children he and Reva adopted. The family moved to Hays in the mid 90's, making their home in Hays. Reva passed away recently.
Stubby enjoyed fishing, especially with Reva, and the couple loved to go driving, especially through the canyon. He and Reva loved music, mostly listening to country and gospel, and Stubby enjoyed the Hays Pow Wow. He loved watching football, and was a long-time Miami Dolphins fan. Most of all, he adored his wife, children, and grandson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Reva Sears; children, Sean Doney and AJ LaRoque; parents, Verner and Elaine Sears, Sr.; sisters, Andrea Sears and Brenda Doney; and parents-in-law, Lindy and Irene Doney.
Stubby is survived by his children, Tyrell LaRoque, and Tony and Heaven Sears, all of Fort Belknap; grandson, Waylon Sears; siblings, Barbara Toves of Wolf Point, Michelle Sears of Harlem, Mike (Shelly) Sears of Poplar, and Verner (Jennifer) Sears, Jr. of Wolf Point; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.
