Obituary

A. A. "Sandy" McLean, 86, of Havre, passed away on Thursday, January 31, 2013, at the Northern Montana Care Center of natural causes. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 4, 2013, at Holland & Bonine Funeral Chapel. The family has requested that memorials be made to the Shriner's Hospital in Sandy's name. Holland & Bonine Funeral Home has been entrusted with services and arrangements. Sandy was born on May 8, 1926, in Havre, to Duncan and Emma (Tranmer) McLean. He was raised in Havre, graduating from Havre High School before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served his country as a Marine before he was injured, resulting in an honorable discharge. In 1946, he married Marilyn Strand in Havre. He began his working career with the Great Northern Railway, working as a conductor for 35 years, through the railroad's transition to Burlington Northern Railroad. Sandy and Marilyn stayed in Havre, raising their four children there. Sandy retired from the railroad in 1985, and he and Marilyn enjoyed their remaining years together until her death in 2005. Sandy enjoyed hunting, fishing, and pretty much any outdoor activity. He was a perpetual joker with a big heart. He loved spending time with friends, as he was a very social person. He had a great memory, never forgetting a name or a face. He was very proud of his military service and his Scottish heritage, but he was most proud of his children and grandchildren. They were his life. He was a phenomenal storyteller, especially for his grandchildren, and they had a great deal of fun and a great time spending their time with Grandpa. Sandy also loved his Scotch and his Brandy. In the early years, he enjoyed taking drives with his family, and in their later years, he and Marilyn loved traveling. Sandy was preceded in death by his beloved wife Marilyn; his parents Duncan and Emma McLean; his brothers Johnny and Alfred McLean; and his sisters Mary Walters, Maggie Hanson, and Jessie Frank. He is survived by his daughters Cindy (Jerry) Schubert and Susie (Bobby) LaSalle, all of Havre; his sons, Sandy (Cherrie) McLean of Auburn, Washington, and Scott (Mary Ann) McLean of Havre; his grandchildren, Danny and Jeremy McLean of Washington, Angela McLean of Michigan, Scotty (Deborah) and Ryan (Jennifer) McLean of Havre, J.T. Schubert of Havre, Karly (Tim) Schell of Edmonds, Washington, and Beau and Kayla LaSalle of Havre; his great-grandchildren Joshua and Justin Carter, Michael Wallace, and Dylan McLean of Washington, Ethan Roberts, and Tavish and Adaira McLean of Havre, and Ali and Abby Schell of Edmonds, Washington; and great friends too numerous to list from his years on the railroad.
